Beautiful day brings beautiful people out for beautiful idea

came up from Davis to speak at the event and share to their world traveling experiences while promoting peace and human rights.
      "This is wonderful," the elder Lotter said. "We need to support each other and this day is a chance to remind each other the importance of taking a stand, to remind people the importance of unity."
      He also encouraged everyone to read and familiarize themselves with the United Nation's Declaration of Human Rights, a pocketbook copy of which he kept with him.
      He added his favorite parts of the afternoon were the African drummers and watching everyone get up and dance to the drummers' rhythm.
      "Those drummers from Senegal (Africa) took me back to the time I spent in Malawi," he said.
      As Peace Corps volunteers, Will and Jane spent several years in Malawi, Africa
and developed the program.
      Will and Jane Lotter are both graduates of Cal Berkeley, and over the course of their 57-year marriage, they have traveled the world promoting human rights and peace.
      They were part of the Underground Railroad, helping refugees flee the violence in El Salvador and Guatemala in the 1980s, and were founding members of the Davis Religious Community for Sanctuary.
      They were recently awarded the 2005 Martin Luther King Jr. Recognition Award for Lifetime Achievement.
      The center's vice-president, Ricardo Maldonado, said the festival is worthwhile event that sends the message that everyone is welcome on the Ridge.
      He said he has only been with the center for about a year-and-a-half, however he thought it was a worthwhile organization with a worthwhile goal so he decided to volunteer.

"There are a lot of goodhearted people at the center and that really impressed me," he said.
      The festival has been a regular event on the Ridge since the center formed in 2000.
