YOUTH PROGRAMS

STARS (Safety, Tolerance And Respect Superstars) and Camp Friendship, provide children from diverse backgrounds with opportunities to have fun, bond in friendship and understanding, and gain self-confidence through the use of nonviolent techniques and tools. Both programs share common objectives for the girls and boys who participate:
  • To learn respect and esteem for themselves and others
  • To honor and protect differences (whether skin color, ethnicity, abilities/disabilities, gender, physical size, beliefs)
  • To gain an understanding of put-downs and bullying, and the pain they cause
  • To acquire practical methods for controlling anger
  • To learn how to deal with conflict situations in noncombative and nonviolent ways
  • To create healthy relationships through honesty and kindness

The curriculum of both STARS and Camp Friendship is drawn from a variety of sources with proven effectiveness: the Virtues Project, the Southern Poverty Law Center's Teaching Tolerance materials, Operation Respect's Don't Laugh at Me, and the Start Something program materials of the Tiger Woods Foundation.
